Besides using weapons, Beatrice can learn hundreds of different skills. Each gun has its own set of active skills. For example, you can unlock rapid fire for the pistol, hit all enemies at once with birdshot from the shotgun, or empty an entire magazine with the automatic rifle. There are also many passive skills for offense and defense giving Beatrice more strategic options as she progresses.
